Martin County is unique because we have significantly more waterways and waterfront property than the average county in Florida. Being blessed with this much water and beauty limits our infrastructure. More water means fewer roads and less space for housing. It also means a greater variety of wildlife and nature. This unique landscape consists of terrains that are not easily understood, such as the Everglades, wetlands, savannas, and more. We, the citizens of Martin County, have a duty to preserve and care for it. Our early founders understood this and created a "Plan" to reduce the strain on our delicate environment and to grow responsibly.
Our already overburdened roads and bridges were not meant to handle the current traffic, much less add thousands more commuters, trucks, and busses. The current administration struggles to balance unprecedented growth and necessary preservation. Our entire state is under tremendous pressure to accommodate this influx of new residents. It is our responsibility to remind the commissioners of the need to resist these pressures and respect these lands and the integrity of our home.
The City and County Council are our representatives and keepers. We elected them to protect Stuart, Martin County, and the beautiful nature surrounding us. We must give them the guidance and support to make the right decisions. Our job is to remind them of their obligation to consider the long-term consequences of their choices today. Like the leaders before them, they must preserve and respect this legacy and leave a legacy that will be honored and appreciated for generations.
